Biography

Vincenzo Piuri is Full Professor at the University of Milan, Italy (since 2000), where he was also Department Chair (2007-2012). He was Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano, Italy (1992-2000), visiting professor at the University of Texas at Austin, USA (summers 1996-1999), and visiting researcher at George Mason University, USA (summers 2012-2019).

He founded a start-up company, Sensure srl, in the area of intelligent systems for industrial applications (leading it from 2007 until 2010) and was active in industrial research projects with several companies.

He received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, Italy.

Research & Industrial Expertise

His main research and industrial application interests are: artificial intelligence, computational intelligence, intelligent systems, pattern analysis and recognition, machine learning, signal and image processing, biometrics, intelligent measurement systems, industrial applications, distributed processing systems, internet-of-things, cloud computing, fault tolerance, application-specific digital processing architectures, and arithmetic architectures.

His research was performed in national and European projects funded by industries, the European Union, the Italian Ministry of Research, and the National Research Council of Italy. He published innovative results in more than 400 papers in international journals, international conference proceedings, books, and book chapters.

Management & Leadership in IEEE

Vincenzo Piuri has been very active in promoting activities, cooperation, and internationalization in the IEEE. He was IEEE Director (2010-2012, 2015) and member of the IEEE Strategic Planning AdHoc Committee (2014, 2016). IEEE Members Services

He has been promoting activities for IEEE Members and the scientific and technological communities worldwide and locally. He served as Program Chair of the 2017 IEEE Sections Congress. He cooperated to strategic planning of the IEEE Members services as member of the MGA Strategic Direction and Environmental Assessment Committee (2016). He created and managed the volunteer training program in technical activities (2014-2016). He promoted and organized an outreach program to enhance the cooperation among Sections in Regions, Societies and Technical Councils in Divisions, and the Standards Association (2015-2016). He is member of the IEEE Entrepreneurship Committee (2019-2020) and Chair of the IEEE Italy Section Entrepreneurship Committee (2019-2020) promoting the creation of an integrated network to support entrepreneurship and, especially, young entrepreneurs in the fields of IEEE. He was chair or member of Technical Field Awards Committees and proposed the creation of various awards to recognize the excellence of scientists, professionals, and volunteers. He served as Vice President for Members Activities in the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (2003-2004), Founding Chair both of the IEEE Systems Council Italy Chapter (2008-2009) and the IEEE Biometrics Council Italy Chapter (2009), IEEE Student Branch Counselor at Politecnico di Milano (1993-2004). He promoted the creation of more than 30 Chapters of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society worldwide.

Technical Activities in IEEE

He has been very active in nurturing technical areas and the scientific, technical, and professional communities. He was IEEE Vice President for Technical Activities (2015) and in the Technical Activities Strategic Planning Committee (2016, chair; 2011-2014, member). He was President of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (2006-2007). He is the founder and co-chair of the IEEE Environmental Engineering Initiative (since 2014). He was member of the Steering Committee of the IEEE Internet of Things Initiative (2016). He served on various technical committees of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, the IEEE Computer Society, the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society, the IEEE Systems Council, and the IEEE Biometrics Council. He was Founding Chair or Co-Chair of various IEEE technical committees in the Computational Intelligence Society Technical Committee and the Instrumentation and Measurement Society. He was Vice Chair of the IEEE NTDC Technical Committee on Biometrics (2005-2008) and significantly contributed to the creation of the IEEE Biometric Council (2006-2008). He also served as Chair of the Technical Activity Committee on Defect Tolerance of the IEEE Computer Society Test Technology Technical Committee (1995-2006).

Conferences

For over 20 years, he served on many technical program committees of international conferences and organized more than 100 international conferences and workshops, as General Chair, Program Chair, or in other positions. These conferences were mainly sponsored by the IEEE, in particular by the Computational Intelligence Society, the Communications Society, the Computer Society, and the Instrumentation and Measurement Society.

Publications in IEEE

Vincenzo Piuri accomplished several editorial activities. He is Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Systems Journal (2013-2019) and is serving or served on the editorial boards of various international journals, including the IEEE Transactions on Computers (2015-2018), IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing (since 2016), IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks (2002-2004) and the IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement (1997-2002). He contributed to strategic planning as member of the IEEE PSPB Strategic Planning Committee (2013, 2009-2011). He also was Vice President for Publications both of the IEEE Systems Council (2008-2011) and the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society (2002-2004).

Educational Activities

He was active also in educational activities. He was Chair of the IEEE Biometrics Certification Committee (2008-2013) and Vice President for Education of the IEEE Biometrics Council (2008-2009). He was Director of the IEEE-UNIMI Winter Academy on Internet-of-Things, jointly organized by the IEEE and the University of Milan, Italy (2015 and 2016 editions). He was Director of the Ph.D. Degree Program in Computer Science, University of Milan, Italy (2005-07). He was Director of the International Master's Degree Program on Soft Computing for Industrial Applications (2003-2004), University of Milan (Italy), with the support of the IEEE Neural Networks Society, IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society, INNS - International Neural Networks Society, and ENNS - European Neural Network Society; and Scientific Co-Director of the NATO-IEEE-INNS-ENNS Advanced Study Institute on Neural Networks for Instrumentation, Measurement, and Related Industrial Applications, Crema, Italy (2001).

Honors

Vincenzo Piuri is IEEE Fellow (2001), member of IEEE-HNK (2011), ACM Distinguished Scientist (2008), and INNS Senior Member (2009). He is Honorary Professor at Obuda University, Budapest, Hungary (since 2014), Guangdong University of Petrochemical Technology, China (since 2014), Muroran Institute of Technology, Japan (since 2016), and Amity University, India (since 2017).
